| Buddy of mine, who is a Bimmer guy I sometimes hit the track with, comes into my office this morning and tells me that the calendar of opening times for the Nordschleife no longer extends beyond October. Also says a couple German and Dutch car guys were saying things looked grim beyond this summer/fall. A week or two ago I referred to the impending bankruptcy in terms of incompetency. Skip down to the chronology of events. I have to say, since the first time I went one of the first things I noticed was an over-abundance of extra "crap" built up all around the place that is obviously new, and largely deserted. The germans refer to it mockingly as Nur-disney. So if some of you were considering doing some motorsport tourism, might want to accelerate your plans. With nobody lined up to take the ring off the state's hands, it appears there could be issues with securing the contracts for some of the headliner events like the 24hr race (not sure what their deal is with F1, but Ecclestone is not welcome in Germany, as in he will be handcuffed, so I cant see him doing the German gov't any favors), which could doom any prospects of the place being open for business. As before, I have an open invitation to any Z guys who want to drive the place, along with any of the other tracks within an hour of my place, Spa-Francorchamps & Zolder Circuit (former Belgian F1 track). We can take my TT or you can go in a rental car, or get a performance rental (Elise, 911, various Renaults, pricey but likely worth it for a one-time experience), but the clock appears to be ticking. I'm amazed such an iconic jewel of German culture, and motorsport culture in general is suffering this fate. IMO this is bigger than if Indianapolis were facing closure.
